Maine Wire Editor-in-Chief Steve Robinson sat down with conservative legal activist and Co-Chairman of the Federalist Society Leonard Leo to discuss the recent Supreme Court rulings, liberal smear campaigns, and why he’s decided to become a Mainer.

Listen to Part 1 of the interview here. Part 2 will publish Tuesday morning.

In addition to his work with the Federalist Society, Leo advised President Donald Trump on the selection and confirmation processes of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

Leo is a longtime friend of Justice Clarence Thomas, aiding in Thomas’ Supreme Court confirmation hearings, as well as the confirmations of Justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito during the Bush Administration.

After the reversal of Roe v. Wade in June of 2022, Leo was targeted by almost daily protests, with dozens of pro-abortion activists gathering outside of his summer residence in Mount Desert Island, Maine.

A Roman Catholic, Leo sits on the board of National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, is a knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, was national co-chair of Catholic outreach for the Republican National Committee, and has served on the boards of the Catholic Association and its affiliate foundation.

Leo has also been instrumental in building a network of conservative legal groups that have been active in a wide range of legal issues, including abortion, gun rights, and religious liberty.

Leonard Leo may be a Catholic but his coreligionists made a very weak effort to defeat LD 1619, the Full Term abortion bill, that just passed in the ME House and Senate.
